A partner (a vendor, a clearing house, another institution) drops a file on an unpredictable schedule, and you owe them one back. Do it by hand and files get processed half-written, picked up late, or missed entirely on the day someone's out; a bad or partial file flows straight into downstream processing before anyone notices.
